Meet Kelsey Mathison

Art Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

I’m Kelsey, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and Art Therapist based in Clinton, Ontario, and I own and operate Althea Therapeutic Services. Here, I combine my love for art and psychology with a feminist viewpoint, and client-centered, humanistic approach. I initially chose art therapy to help people express feelings that are hard to say in words. Now, I offer this space to those also looking to explore traditional talk therapy.

I provide a safe, welcoming space where you can explore and share through art and conversation. Each session is focused on your needs, making sure it feels helpful and personal. If you want to try a new way to understand yourself, heal, or communicate, I’m here to support you. Whether alone or in a group, my goal is to help you feel seen, heard, and empowered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before starting your creative healing journey.

What is art psychotherapy?

Art psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that combines traditional talk therapy with creative expression such as drawing, painting, collage, or sculpture. It allows you to explore emotions and experiences through both words and imagery, guided by a qualified art psychotherapist.

Who can benefit from art psychotherapy?

Art psychotherapy can support children, teens, and adults experiencing a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and emotional overwhelm. It can also be helpful for people who find verbal therapy difficult.

Do I need to be good at art?

No artistic skill is required. Art psychotherapy is not about creating “good” art, it’s about the process of expression. Anyone can benefit, even if they’ve never drawn or painted before.

What psychotherapy methods are used?

Kelsey typically pulls from various evidence-based psychotherapy methods to tailor talk and art therapy sessions to each individual's needs.

Methods used include but are not limited to: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

What should I expect in a session?

Kelsey structures art therapy and talk therapy sessions based on your needs. A typical art therapy session may include art therapy directives, free artmaking, reflections, and visualizations using traditional and nontraditional art materials.

A typical talk therapy session may include guided visualizations and/or mindfulness, learning and practicing therapeutic tools (skills building), and of course, conversation.

Do you accept insurance?

While I do not offer direct billing at this time, I am able to provide receipts for clients located in Ontario to submit to their insurance companies. It is recommended to verify with your insurance provider if psychotherapy services are covered in your plan.
